I'm 21 and I started breaking out across my chin and mouth area several weeks ago. I've had breakouts before (especially in my early teens) but they all healed up within a few days/weeks without leaving marks.

But this time, every single blemish (even little ones that fade in a day) leaves a dark red mark on my face. This is really affecting my self-image, and I'm at a total loss as to what else to do!

Right now I'm washing 2x a day with Cetaphil (which kept me totally free of breakouts for two years before this!), moisturizing with Clinique moisturizer, and using Stridex Day and Night on the worst areas (the day gel has 2% salycic acid, and the night cream has 2.5% benzoyl peroxide). I just started the Stridex, and I know that it can make the acne worse for the first few weeks before it makes it better; however, this is hardly good news for me because even the "temporary" acne is leaving the dark red marks.

Does anyone have tips for what can prevent and/or lighten the red marks? Also, each blemish is healing *very* slowly; is this normal for adult acne, or maybe is my skin missing something that aids healing (ie, vitamins)?

I think you are using too much stuff. I would drop the strydex pads.
Too much alcohol makes your face make more oil to make up for the oil you are trying to get rid of.
All those products have alot of alcohol.
I would try Dove bar soap..When I was using clearasil and all those pads and stuff my face was breaking out. When I stopped, it cleared up!

The Stridex day and night acne medication is a tough call, because the day gel contains alcohol and witch hazel which makes it too drying and irritating for your skin. However, the night gel is a very good product. A better salicylic acid product is Neutrogena Deep Pore Treatment or Clear Pore Treatment Nightime Pore Clarifying Gel Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment. A good benzoyl peroxide product you can by alone is Oxy Balance Sensitive Skin Acne Treatment.

Also, what Clinique moisturizer are you using? You really don't need a moisturizer unless your skin is dry (though most people don't believe this). You do need a sunscreen however. Only use the moisturizer on dry areas or around your eyes.

You can't really do much for the red scars (vitamins don't help), you just have to wait for them to fade. Avoid irritating your skin (like with the product you are using that has alcohol in it) and your skin will heal better.
