The Vision of Dr. Barry Sears
We enjoy sharing our enthusiasm for omega-3 EPA/DHA concentrate from fish. It all started when Dr. Barry Sears published his ground breaking books "The OmegaRx Zone" (2002) and "The Anti-Inflammation Zone" (2005). Zone Labs was founded to deliver products that met the vision and integrity of Dr. Sears.

The first impression people have of Zone Labs is that the company makes products based on the Zone Diet. In reality we make products to help people live an anti-inflammatory lifestyle, and OmegaRx is our number one product. How do we sell OmegaRx? We sell primarily through doctors, although an increasing amount of business is direct. Our product is not available in stores.

Zone Labs has a focus on omega-3 (fish oil) purity and potency that is unsurpassed. Here’s why:

Purity
We test with the International Fish Oil Standards managed through the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. No U.S. company tests every batch with IFOS and no company in the world runs more tests with IFOS than Zone Labs. Here’s the trick for other companies: test a couple of batches with IFOS and make an IFOS claim. Many companies speak with pride at how their products adhere to the Norwegian Medicinal Standards, European Pharmacopeia, or the standards put forth by The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN). The IFOS standard is significantly stricter than all other global standards, as the chart below demonstrates:

Zone Labs tests every batch to confirm a five star IFOS rating (the highest), something for which we work very hard to achieve. A star is awarded for surpassing each section of the chart above, and we test every batch to ensure a 5 star rating. The results for every batch are posted on our website and anyone can view these. We can’t think of another company that does this. If you hear other companies say that their fish oil is "free of all lead, PCBs and heavy metals and is perfectly clean", the statement is just plain false; it’s impossible. What is actually happening is that they are measuring to a lesser standard (Norwegian, European, CRN, etc..) and making a claim that the product is "perfectly clean" based on an assumption that the standard set a level of quality to support it.

Potency
Zone Labs offers +60% omega-3 EPA and DHA in all products. You can’t buy a more potent omega-3 supplement at retail. Most fish oil supplements have 30% EPA and DHA, the rest is just filler. When you take a 1000mg fish oil capsule, be aware of the fact that the concentration of the active ingredients is in question. We actually test for potency, which is included in the IFOS batch test results posted on our website. Our bottle claims to have 400mg of EPA and 200mg of DHA for every 1000mg of fish oil, which equates to 60% potency. The average of the 14 batches that we are currently shipping is 434mg EPA and 254mg DHA, which equates to an astounding 68.8% potency.

The Patent
Zone Labs offers the only patented, ultra-pure omega-3 EPA/DHA concentrate with natural agents from sesame concentrates that help inhibit the production of arachidonic acid as well as adding antioxidant capacity to protect the EPA and DHA from oxidation. This U.S. patent, 6172106 issued in 2001 is exclusive to Zone Labs. The abstract starts, "Methods for inhibiting .DELTA.-5-desaturase activity, for inhibiting arachidonic acid metabolism..." which is a key component for controlling silent inflammation.

The Value
Why pay $40.76 for a month supply of OmegaRx? People often compare us to the $10, $20 or $30 that they would pay for an alternative product in a health food or grocery store. Our daily dose is 4 capsules (4000mg at 60% potency) versus the one or two capsule recommendations of other products. When you take OmegaRx you’re getting a strong, clinically valid dose of EPA and DHA. This issue was written about in a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, and we proudly emailed it out to everyone in January. Since EPA and DHA are the only substances in fish oil that have any health benefits, one must compare the cost on a gram for gram basis. A month supply (1 bottle of 120 capsules) of OmegaRx has 72,000 mg of EPA and DHA, which means that our customers pay $0.566 per gram of ‘active ingredients’. The $26.95 bottle of "Ultimate Omega" from Nordic Naturals equates to $.81 per gram EPA and DHA. The $49.95 bottle of "Maximum Strength Omega-3" from Iceland Health costs $3.33 per gram of EPA and DHA. We’d rather be recognized by the fact that we test every batch to IFOS standards, deliver great potency, and hold an exclusive patent. However, given the other things we do in our manufacturing and quality control processes our price represents a very fair value.

What It All Means
In the end our focus on omega-3 EPA/DHA concentrate from fish means that you can feel confident that you are receiving the benefits from fish oil that are supported in dozens of published studies.
